“Butler reflects on lifelong service and quiet, aching regrets.”

This is one of my favorite pieces of British literature, a contemplative historical novel following an English butler nearing retirement reflecting on his life of service. Through flashbacks during a long drive, he questions romanticizing his employer, realizing he might have supported the wrong person. It has an incredible feeling of yearning, especially in subtle moments with the love interest that break your heart. It's not plot-driven but beautifully character-focused—perfect to disappear into. I love it so much and have another Ishiguro book in the dark academia section.
