“Obsessive tension brews in Dutch family house secrets.”

I'm biased as a Dutch reader for this '60s Netherlands tale of suppressed desire and obsession, but it's gorgeously subtle on family history, homophobia, and Jewish treatment post-war. The main character lives with her brother in their deceased mother's house, hating her brother's new girlfriend as an infiltrator who's annoying yet pretty, leading to obsessive tension. It proves enemies-to-lovers and spicy scenes work literary-style, with words so beautiful I lay on the floor in awe. It even made me buy and enjoy pears! I'd recommend for subtle, tense literary fiction on hidden desires.
